The acquisition and restoration of the George W. Bush Childhood Home has been far-reaching in its scope, beginning even before the initial purchase. In 2001 the George W. Bush Childhood Home and another home next door to the presidential childhood home were purchased by the nonprofit entity Bush Childhood Home, Inc. that now owns and manages it. By 2003, fundraising for the home and the next-door home, which was acquired with the intention of making it the Visitor's Center, quickly passed the $1,000,000 mark for restoration costs. The history of the city of Midland, Texas could well be the history of the oil boom in Texas and the emergence of the petroleum industry as we now know it today. By 1950, the previously obscure West Texas town of Midland boasted 215 oil companies and was well on its way to becoming the economic center for the burgeoning oil business of the Permian Basin. It was here, in Midland, that George Bush, Sr. came to make his fortune in the oil business in the 1950s, and where the younger George would grow to call home.
